About The Position

Head Custodian Under limited supervision, performs a variety of manual activities cleaning and maintaining buildings and functions as a head custodian for a small number of lower level custodial workers. Controls and performs routine maintenance to heating and air conditioning equipment on the work site. Reports to the school principal and/or other designated school administrator. Bus Driver Under general supervision, work performed, includes but is not limited to driving bus safely to destination and return; following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in custodial work and some experience in supervising other workers preferred.
  • 5 years of responsible driving experience.
  • Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course.
  • Must be able to pass the required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results.
  • Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to subordinates.
  • Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using prescribed format.
  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal to moderate levels of stress.
  • Valid NC driver's license and school bus driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns tasks to other custodians.
  • Demonstrates work procedures.
  • Observes work of lower level custodians and identifies any needed improvement.
  • Tends heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Cleans and makes minor repairs and adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Moves equipment and supplies as directed.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture or facilities.
  • Reports to supervisor damages or needed repairs requiring outside attention.
  • Washes windows, woodwork, walls and other surfaces.
  • Cleans and polishes floors.
  • Replaces light bulbs and florescent tubes.
  • Empties wastebaskets and other trash receptacles.
  • Locks and unlocks doors.
  • Maintains adequate supplies and materials on site.
  • Maintains records of work schedules and assignments.
  • Reports outstanding or unsatisfactory work and behavior to supervisors.
  • Drives bus safely to destination and return. Conforms to traffic rules and regulations; makes vehicle pre-checks and records and reports malfunctions; follows school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; and keeps the bus clean.
  • Follows school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes. Picks up and drops off students at designated times and bus stops; ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops; and determines that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route.
  • Monitor students' behavior while they are riding on the bus. Take suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur and report inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.
