About The Position

Serves on a custodian crew providing services for the Department of Residential Life maintaining over 1,900,000 square feet in residence halls and apartments housing over 5,000 students at the state's only comprehensive, Class 1 Research University with over 25,000 students and 4,500 full time faculty and staff. High degrees of public contact and interaction with staff and students. Frequent contacts with general public through support provided for continuing education programs, seminars, institutes, workshops and conferences.

Requirements

  • Custodian 1: No experience or training required.
  • Custodian 2: Six months of experience in custodial, housekeeping, grounds keeping or food service work.
  • Must be capable of walking around a 10,000 square foot building multiple times daily and be able to ascend and descend the stairs of a 5 story building multiple times daily.
  • Must be capable to stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Must be capable of moving furniture that weighs 20 to 40 lbs or more.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans residence hall lobbies, bathrooms, hallways and other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, dusting and polishing.
  • Empties trash and recycling containers, transports waste material to outdoor refuse containers or recycling containers as appropriate.
  • Cleans, strips, waxes and polishes floors using industrial size mops and/or commercial type floor machines.
  • Operates wet/dry vacuum, carpet extraction equipment, other commercial equipment as required for cleaning and shampooing carpets or cleaning up after water leaks or floods.
  • Washes building exteriors, windows, walls, fixtures, steps and sidewalks using power washers, pressure sprayers, commercial window washing equipment, cleaning solutions or other related equipment and materials.
  • Unlocks/locks campus buildings utilizing assigned building, room and master keys.
  • Moves and sets up tables, chairs, partitions, sign stanchions and other related equipment used for special events.
  • Performs a variety of other tasks including maintaining and cleaning equipment, reporting safety hazards, and recording maintenance problems.
