About The Position

The Tennessee School for the Blind is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Custodial Service Worker to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position plays a vital role in supporting the health and wellness of our visually impaired student population by ensuring all facilities are maintained to the highest standard of cleanliness and safety.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Understanding of safety practices related to custodial work (e.g., proper lifting techniques, chemical safety, use of personal protective equipment).
  • Familiarity with basic maintenance and sanitation standards in school or institutional environments.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to working in an educational setting with students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, floor scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain cleanliness standards consistently.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with staff, students, and supervisors.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain routine records as required.
  • Dependability, reliability, and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic ability to build relationships with students, colleagues, and parents, and to provide individualized support and feedback.

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Must have a minimum of one year of custodial experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that is above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for the experience on a year for year basis.
  • Selected applicants must verify experience/highest degree held.
  • The selected applicant must comply with the State of Tennessee Employee Drug-Free Workplace Policy, and other policies.
  • Selected applicants will be required to submit to and pass a TBI/FBI background check to include Tennessee and Federal criminal history checks, child abuse records, employment verification, and professional/personal reference checks.

Responsibilities

  • Performing general, routine custodial duties including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
  • Performing routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Emptying trash receptacles, disposing trash into dumpsters, and bagging trash for proper disposal.
  • Unlocking doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
  • Reporting needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
  • Ensuring proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promoting continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Assisting with on-the-job training of new staff on routine procedures.
  • Performing cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on seasonal/project requirements.
  • May provide vendors with access to areas for cleaning and may answer basic questions; may report issues with vendors to supervisors.
  • May assist with or perform snow removal activities and minor maintenance, such as replacing light bulbs, adjusting furniture, or other similar activities.
  • Performing miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
