About The Position

The Custodial Worker 2 will complete assigned project work that will assist the Student Life Environmental Services Department in providing a clean and safe environment for student residents, guests, and staff of The Ohio State University. This position will specialize in project work consisting of hard floor surface refinishing, hard floor maintenance and special cleaning, carpet cleaning, public/shared shower cleaning, and upholstery cleaning; bed lifting and furniture removal; responsible for a variety of other day-to-day cleaning; responsible for maintenance tasks as needed; climbs ladders and scaffolding; changes lightbulbs and completes high dusting; may be asked to respond to emergencies; reports any damage or theft discovered in work area; interact with and build relationships with students and building staff while maintaining productivity standards and goals; normally works 3:30 pm. to 11:30 p.m.; weekend work is required; this position will be primarily responsible for residence halls, but may be required to work in an Environmental Services department/building from district to district per operational needs; The Custodial Worker 2 must successfully complete and pass the CMI Basic Module training and exam during their probationary period-failure to do so may result in probationary removal.

Requirements

  • Per CCS specifications
  • Six months in Custodial Worker 1 title or equivalent experience
  • Documentation of successful completion of department specific, advanced custodian certification testing (examples include Cleaning Management Institute, 3M(TM), S.M.A.R.T. Program, or other certification program recognized in the cleaning industry as reputable)
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide whole numbers and to read and write common vocabulary plus.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience (1 year) of institutional or large facility cleaning
  • Experience (1 year) in operation of carpet extractor, floor burnisher/buffer, walk behind or ride-on auto scrubber, and/or various other types of cleaning equipment
  • Ability to lift and/or move furniture
  • Ability to lift 25 to 75 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Completes project work to include but is not limited to floor refinishing, carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning and floor maintenance as assigned and scheduled
  • Performs a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks; sweeps, mops, strips, waxes, polishes, renews floor surfaces; cleans and shampoos rugs and carpets; washes walls; cleans, dusts, empties trash receptacles; removes and hangs drapes; removes snow and ice from walkways; general upkeep and debris removal from exterior of building including but not limited to entrance ways, outside trash areas, planters, and other surrounding areas as needed
  • Operates and maintains Environmental Services Department equipment and housekeeping storage areas; ensures chemicals are in properly labeled containers and are used in proper dilution and in a manner based on label instructions and department cleaning procedures; notifies supervisor when supplies are low; maintains assigned equipment for cleanliness; assists in cleaning of emergency spills observed or upon request; assists in training of Custodial Workers as requested and/or assigned; provides equipment safety evaluation before and after project assignments communicating needed repairs or issues with equipment.
  • Attends in-service seminars/workshops as required; provides customary facility cleaning services as needed; removes, transports and disposes of the daily facility generated waste, regular and hazardous, in accordance with safety standards and government regulations.
  • Participates and assists with facility cleaning and maintenance which are described as custodial in nature; during breaks, the majority of duties will be training and/or custodial in nature; performs other duties as assigned.
