About The Position

Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. There are currently two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus in Miami county: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC). Adair Acute Care are a 60-bed facility, certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. All employees are expected to work in a harmonious and cooperative fashion with other staff to provide efficient and effective customer service: to use free time as available to assist other staff in the completion of work assignments and perform other tasks as needed; to contribute to a positive work environment through a positive, helpful, courteous demeanor towards staff, customers and the general public; and to adhere to appropriate standards of conduct regarding the use of leave, reports to work on time and in the designated fashion. The essential functions of this position may require physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, stand for extended periods of time, lift and/or restrain residents with or without assistance and respond to aggressive resident behavior with specific, trained techniques. Be able to observe and respond to residents in distress. Osawatomie State Hospital Adair Acute Care is funded in part by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is subject to requirements bestowed by Federal and State levels of government conditions of participation. Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments as necessary. The incumbent of this position has authorized access or the potential of incidental exposure to Protected Health Information (PHI) under the provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPQAQA) Privacy Rule. PHI must be treated in accordance with the provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Regulations including requirements for safeguarding, releasing and recording the release of such information. The incumbent has been trained in the provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Regulations as they relate to the duties of this position. Position Summary: Custodial Specialists are required to work on patient units and around mentally ill patients. Cleans and sanitizes patient and non-patient areas in a manner which ensures patients receive treatment in a clean, safe environment. The incumbent of this position will follow hospital policies/procedures related to infection control, proper cleaning techniques, disposal of common, medical and/or chemical waste products and any other housekeeping/laundry related policies. The incumbent must be able to meet the physical demands and have the ability to move about the campus, as there is substantial walking and standing on concrete floors (six to seven hours daily). Bending, crouching, reaching above the head and below the knee are regular daily tasks performed while cleaning of areas. There is considerable lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, and stooping to care for laundry items weighing approximately 50 pounds. The ability to lift and carry items weighing at least 50 pounds for short distances is essential, as laundry must be delivered to wards by this means. Work is primarily inside where area can be very hot, humid, and noisy. Outside work is performed under all types of weather conditions. Incumbent must occasionally work at heights of 10 feet. Custodial Specialists may occasionally be required to work past their normal quitting time on short notice and on weekends and holidays as needed.

Requirements

Nice To Haves

  • One-year commercial housekeeping/custodial/laundry experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning of assigned area consisting of patient unit, treatment areas and or non-patient area.
  • Cleans restrooms and shower rooms as well as bedrooms, laundry and kitchen areas, meeting rooms, offices, day halls, hallways, and other areas as appropriate.
  • Dust mops, mops, and vacuums floors.
  • Assists in maintaining appropriate levels of clean linens in all areas of the hospital including patient and non-patient areas.
  • Sort soiled linens using correct equipment and procedures, load, and unload linens into and from washers, dryers and extractors.
  • Operates washers, dryers, extractors, presses and flat iron to process laundry. At times may be required to drive laundry delivery truck.
