About The Position

The Curatorial Assistant plays a vital role in the Painting and Sculpture Department at SFMOMA, contributing to various aspects of the department's work, including the management of the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, accessions, and administrative projects. Reporting to the Interim Curator and Head of Painting and Sculpture, the Curatorial Assistant is responsible for supporting curators in the research, development, documentation, presentation, and interpretation of the SFMOMA collection and temporary exhibitions. This position requires maintaining effective communication on behalf of the department with museum staff, donors, artists, and arts professionals, while also building and nurturing relationships with the local, national, and international art community, including artists, collectors, dealers, and staff from other museums. The role involves assisting with collection and exhibition research, which includes compiling biographies, chronologies, and exhibition histories, as well as documenting individual works in the collections management system. The Curatorial Assistant will support the preparation, coordination, and implementation of Painting and Sculpture Accessions Committee meetings and other events, which entails generating guest lists, reserving facilities, procuring necessary equipment, confirming arrangements, and greeting guests on behalf of the department. Additionally, the assistant will draft communications from the Painting and Sculpture Department, including newsletters and invitations to department events, and assist in producing correspondence, loan forms, manuscripts, exhibition wall labels, and other materials related to the permanent collection and special exhibitions. The position also requires reviewing finished materials for completeness and accuracy, maintaining a computer database of exhibition checklists, and compiling data for the museum-wide annual DEI Dashboard. The Curatorial Assistant will facilitate interdepartmental communication with various departments, provide support for lectures and presentations, maintain accurate records of meetings, oversee departmental email and inbox, and assist with travel budgets and arrangements for curatorial staff and visiting artists. The role may also involve acting as a spokesperson for the department and the museum, greeting guests, and providing occasional tours of the galleries. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
