About The Position

The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is seeking a Curator of Exhibits to join its Visual Arts Division. This position plays a crucial role in planning, coordinating, and overseeing the selection and installation of temporary art exhibitions and their related public programs at the Chicago Cultural Center and other DCASE or City facilities. The Curator will collaborate with artists, arts and cultural organizations, and DCASE visual arts colleagues to engage with the art community and relevant stakeholders in the development of exhibitions and their related programs. The Curator will also support the overall curation of the exhibition program, ensuring that exhibitions are inclusive and accessible to all Chicagoans and visitors. The Curator of Exhibits will be responsible for managing the exhibition selection process, maintaining organized guidelines and schedules, and ensuring clear communication with artists and partners throughout the exhibition process. This role requires a strong understanding of contemporary visual arts, as well as the ability to develop and maintain relationships with local, national, and international arts communities. The Curator will also assist in the research and cataloguing of exhibition objects, prepare interpretive materials, and support community engagement activities related to exhibitions. Additionally, the Curator will oversee exhibition budgets and collaborate with various stakeholders to identify and develop artistic themes for exhibits. This position is based at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) located at the Chicago Cultural Center, and the working hours are typically from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility required for installations and public programs.
