About The Position

One Cultural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide entry-level training and experience on a range of cultural resources projects supporting the Cultural Resources Management (CRM) program at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. A Cultural Resources Technician supports the identification, documentation, and preservation of archaeological sites, historic structures, or collections. Key duties often include conducting field surveys, shovel testing, mapping, and artifact analysis, alongside database management and public outreach. Typical requirements include coursework in anthropology, archaeology, history, or museum studies, plus the ability to work outdoors, often in rugged terrain. This position is not-to-exceed 195 working days. Potential work activities may include but are not limited to the tasks below: Archaeological fieldwork: locate, identify, and delineate archaeological sites; conduct subsurface testing and site monitoring; assist with recording/processing data, photo documentation, and collection of artifacts; complete standard forms; draft administrative records reports Tribal relations program: research and update dataReview reports such as survey and evaluation or Environmental Assessments for accuracy and compliance Public outreach: Interpret sites for a public audience, prepare interpretive materials, develop exhibits and public outreach materials National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), Section 106 compliance: assist with review of undertakings, draft correspondence with State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and other consulting parties; support drafting of agreement documents Historic buildings: identify and evaluate historic buildings and districts, conduct condition assessments, complete/ update state forms and real property records Collaboration and outreach: support work with other installation organizations and installation partners on cultural resources projects Cemetery Management: verify/validate location of historically mapped cemeteries on DAF lands; conduct historical research on cemeteries and their occupants (some interviews may be needed) This position is onsite, and the Cultural Resources Technician must have reliable transportation to the site. The ECDP is unable to provide relocation or housing stipends. Full Consideration Date is 16 March at 12:00am. Position Location: Eglin Air Force Base, FL Eglin AFB is a 465,000-acre United States military installation, making it one of the largest AFBs in the world, and the largest forested installation. The base’s undeveloped area, which accounts for 405,000 acres, is primarily used for military training and ordnance testing and research, and secondarily for timber management and outdoor recreation, with over 205,000 acres open to the public. Major areas of the Eglin AFB natural resources program include timber management, outdoor recreation, endangered and protected species management, erosion control, wildland fire management and prescribed burning, and many other special projects. Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field (at least a sophomore standing)
  • At least 3 months and no more than 3 years of relevant experience, which may include internships, fieldwork, seasonal jobs, volunteer work, or applied coursework.
  • Basic field data collection skills (eg. Vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS-based mapping; academic or field school experience would
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
  • You will need to possess a Real ID or passport
  • Must be able to work long hours independently in remote, rugged field conditions under harsh weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field.
  • Familiar with the basic principles of the NHPA and Section 106 compliance
  • Experience conducting research and compiling background information.
  • Experience organizing and planning historical/archival/archaeological research projects.
  • Experience inventorying and assessing cultural properties
  • Prior experience photographing archaeological sites/properties or historic buildings and structures.
  • Experience with cultural resources database entry (eg. tDAR).
  • Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data and/or familiarity with GIS software (eg ArcGIS Pro)
