The Cultural Resources Specialist at Barr Engineering Co. will play a crucial role in supporting the company's cultural resource management practice across various regions in the United States. This position involves working with multidisciplinary teams to address cultural and tribal resources while advocating for Native American communities. The specialist will serve as a liaison between these communities and project teams, ensuring their interests are represented in various projects.

  • Lead archaeology field teams on various project sites throughout Barr's market area.
  • Develop preliminary reports required for project approvals.
  • Perform due diligence reviews for cultural resource management projects.
  • Draft and review sections of state and federal environmental review documents.
  • Assist with permit applications and other technical writing.
  • Help clients interpret regulations and work within regulatory constraints.
  • Prepare documents and reports related to the mitigation of project impacts.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct field visits with clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Develop documentation and coordinate with State Historic Preservation Offices and Tribal Historic Preservation Programs for Section 106 concurrence.
  • Promote authentic, trusting relationships and regular communication between Native American communities and Barr staff.
  • Build relationships and rapport with Native American groups to assist them with their natural resource projects.
  • Advise Barr staff on best practices for engaging with Native Americans.
  • Other duties as assigned and requested.
  • Master's degree in industrial archaeology, archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, ethnography, or a related field or equivalent education and experience.
  • 5 or more years of experience in cultural resources management.
  • 2 or more years of experience leading and supporting crews on Section 106-related field projects.
  • 2 or more years of experience working with Native American communities.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain required permits to perform archaeological surveys on federal, state, and public land throughout Barr's market area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Section 106, the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and state regulations concerning cultural and natural resources management throughout the western and central United States.
  • Experience with literature reviews, field surveys, National Register evaluations, data recovery investigations, construction monitoring, scheduling, budgeting, and report preparation.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in building working relationships across multi-dimensional teams.
  • Experience facilitating consultation with tribal communities.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with local, state, and federal regulators.
  • Familiarity with GIS.
  • Superior writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to meet project needs.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
