About The Position

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking to hire a Cultural Resources Planner for the Office of Realty and Capital Planning. This position conducts and coordinates cultural reviews for IDNR including reviews for OWR projects, IDNR projects, CREP enrollments, Forestry reviews and land offers to DNR. This position works with Impact Assessment and the SHPO. We welcome interested applicants who would like to be part of this team to apply today.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge of and experience with Federal and State preservation mandates pertaining to cultural resources.
  • Requires two years of professional experience in statewide cultural resource management, including a thorough knowledge of all aspects of archaeological field work and laboratory analysis.
  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with courses in archaeology or geology.
  • Requires two years of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Ability to travel as needed in performance of duties, with overnight stays appropriate.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers Bachelor's degree or extensive coursework in archaeology or geology.
  • Two (2) years of experience and knowledge with Federal and State preservation mandates pertaining to cultural resources.
  • Two (2) years of professional expereince in statewide cultural resource managment.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of archaeological field work and laboratory analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of Geographic Information Systems applications to cultural resource protection.
  • Two (2) years of professional experience utilizing excellent organization, administrative, communicative, writing and editorial skills.

Responsibilities

  • Under general direction, conducts Phase One Archaeological field survey and/or Phase Two Archaeological National Register evaluations and laboratory work pursuant to the requirements established by the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), the Secretary of the Interior's (SOI) Guidelines and Standards for Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and the Illinois Archaeological Survey (IAS).
  • Reviews archival and historical research, state archaeological files, state coverage for previous archaeological surverys, historical plats, county histories, field reconnaissance, and intensive archaeological field investigations.
  • Functions as an expert in identifying site requirements to become eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Provides a proposed methodology and budget per assignment to be reviewed and approved by the IDNR CRC.
  • Organizes and submits sufficient, detailed, clear field notes, site forms, journals, and other products in the form of print, type, photocopy, or digital files to be of use by the future researchers to reproduce fully, without loss of information by standard black and white photocopying processes.
  • Independently completes projects assigned by the IDNR CRC within the timeline established.
  • Coordinates the permanent curation of all artifacts and project records (notes, photographs, correspondence, etc.) at the Illinois State Museum, unless otherwise redirected by the IDNR CRC to a different repository.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
