About The Position

The Cultural Resource Management Assistant will support the Resource Management Team at Virginia State Parks by assisting with various cultural resource tasks. This seasonal, full-time position involves conducting historical research, writing assessments, and participating in fieldwork related to cultural resources within Virginia State Parks. The role requires collaboration with the State Parks Cultural Resource Manager and other team members, with opportunities for telework and occasional travel.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cultural resources in Virginia.
  • Experience writing about Virginia history in an academic or professional setting.
  • Experience in cultural resource work focused on archaeology, historic architecture, and cemeteries.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills on cultural resource topics.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams, and Adobe Acrobat.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience creating and editing entries in V-CRIS.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including familiarity with Esri software or equivalent such as ArcPro, Field Maps, and ArcGIS Online, and StoryMaps.
  • Experience working with Tribal Nations.
  • Experience in Historic Preservation, Anthropology, Museum Studies, History, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct historical and archival research focused on cultural resources within Virginia State Parks.
  • Write historical contexts for parks and their associated cultural resources.
  • Write cultural resource inventories and assessments.
  • Assist with writing cultural resource management plans and research reports.
  • Review cultural resource-related research.
  • Participate in occasional daily and overnight travel for fieldwork and training.
  • Aid in the inventorying and assessment of cultural resources within Virginia State Parks.
  • Enter and update entries in the Virginia Cultural Resource Inventory System (V-CRIS).
  • Provide field support for cultural resource projects, including studies, surveys, and data collection.
  • Attend staff meetings and employee training as required.
  • Perform other team support duties as assigned.
