The Culinary Volunteer Host is responsible for creating a fun experience for diverse volunteer groups of all sizes. The Culinary Volunteer Host is an ambassador for Houston Food Bank’s volunteer experience. This role is responsible for delivering the ultimate fun volunteer experience by proactively welcoming volunteers, creatively engaging volunteers throughout the volunteer project, and providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment. The Culinary Volunteer Host provides leadership, motivation, and hands-on guidance to volunteers, overseeing daily kitchen tasks, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and collaborating with the Kitchen Production Supervisor to meet daily production goals. Requirements

  • High School Diploma from an accredited school or general education development (GED) certificate. Some college or bachelor's degrees preferred
  • 1+ years of public speaking experience
  • 2 years of in-person culinary, hospitality, tour guide, activities coordinator, or event coordinating experience
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and insurance.
  • Must be able and willing to operate an electric pallet jack
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, including the public.
  • Exceptional public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Must possess the ability to manage multiple tasks and demands from a variety of people and groups, communicate clearly and effectively, and deliver clear instructions, objectives, and goals to team members and volunteer groups.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills, as well as have a high-energy, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work and think independently and use sound judgment and critical analysis skills.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and apply de-escalation techniques when needed.
  • Ability to utilize and manage time efficiently and quickly shift or change task assignments as needed.
  • Must possess accountability and follow-through on all assigned and ad-hoc tasks.
  • Must possess attention to detail with the ability to process complex information.
  • Must be able to collect and analyze complex data and ability to apply basic arithmetic.
  • Must be able to engage with all members across the organization in a professional and courteous manner.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and Orientation of Volunteers
  • Proactively greets and welcomes volunteers with warmth and enthusiasm, ensuring they feel like valued guests from the moment they arrive.
  • Conducts engaging and fun orientation sessions for groups in the kitchen, setting the stage for a fun volunteer experience.
  • Presentation and Engagement
  • Leads volunteer groups through their projects with a fun and entertaining approach, maintaining high energy and enthusiasm.
  • Uses storytelling, and fun interactive activities, to keep volunteers motivated and excited throughout their shift.
  • Customer Service Excellence:
  • Provides exceptional customer service, addresses volunteer questions and concerns with a smile and ensures every volunteer has a positive impactful experience.
  • Ensures every volunteer feels supported, appreciated, and inspired, creating a smooth and enjoyable experience resulting in them returning to volunteer and getting more involved with the Houston Food Bank.
  • Safety and Efficiency:
  • Oversees volunteer activities, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and efficient project execution.
  • Manages volunteer group coordination seamlessly, including last-minute changes and special events, like a well-orchestrated show.
  • Complies with all state, local, and HACCP policies and stay up to date with all related safety training.
  • Collaboration and Coordination:
  • Stays informed of registered volunteer groups scheduled for each shift and notifies Culinary and Volunteer Services leadership of any changes.
  • Determines volunteer coverage needed to complete production goals for each shift.
  • Changes and cancels volunteer shifts as needed and communicates with registered volunteers about any changes.
  • Works closely with team members to maintain a clean, organized, and well-supplied project area
  • Participates in team meetings to share insights and continuously enhances the volunteer experience.
  • Manages data entry of volunteer production and develop reports.
  • Quality Control and Maintenance:
  • Inspects finished products for quality assurance, ensuring everything meets the highest standards.
  • Keeps project areas pristine and reports any equipment issues promptly.
  • Reliable, consistent, on-site attendance is a requirement. This position requires punctuality and dependable attendance to meet the needs of the business, including attending and participating in meetings and presentations.
