About The Position

Founded in 1981, NIA Community Services Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing issues that impact youth, families, and seniors. NIA’s mission, to strengthen and empower children, families, and communities through comprehensive programming and vital human services, is evidenced each day through programming that directly supports and enriches the lives of children and families we serve at nearly 50 sites located across many of New York City's most diverse and underserved neighborhoods through after-school programs, summer day camps, cultural arts opportunities, youth and family counseling services, parent workshops, community assistance, referral services, senior support programs, and community events. Visit us at www.niabklyn.org. Cornerstone Programs are located in NYCHA community centers throughout New York City and provide academic and recreational opportunities for children, teens and adults. The center offers services every weekday from 10:00am to 10:00pm, Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and during extended hours during the summer and on school holidays. This Teaching Artist is responsible for providing direct service to adult and senior program participants. Teaching Artists plan and lead structured workshops in their particular specialty area, which includes creating scope and sequence for workshop series and providing a detailed materials list and recipe for each workshop, with modifications for dietary restrictions. Workshop series will be once per month, weekday evenings or weekends, starting in January and ending in October 2026.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Experience working/leading in an educational culinary setting required (e.g., Accredited Culinary Program, Recreational/Public Culinary Programs)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students of disparate backgrounds, education levels, and cultures.
  • Must be punctual and reliable.
  • Must successfully complete NYC DOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Register Clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in youth development and community work is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Coney Island community, NYCHA housing developments, DOE and youth programming, and DYCD programming is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a written workshop plan with full materials list, recipe, and modification options.
  • Conduct interactive cooking sessions, emphasizing meal planning, nutrition, and safe cooking practices.
  • Assure that classes are conducted in a manner that complies with principles of food safety and sanitation
  • Assess participants' culinary skills and provide constructive feedback to encourage progress
  • Act as a positive role model to participants and promote team-building and respect for self and others.
  • Communicate and interact with participants of all ages in a professional, welcoming, and appropriate manner.
  • Intervene, mediate, and problem-solve where potential conflict arises with participants; alert on-site supervisor of any emergencies.
  • Maintain a safe environment for participants.
  • Work collaboratively with co-workers and cooperatively with supervisors.
