About The Position

The CT Extern position at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is a part-time role (8 hours a week) focused on supporting imaging technologists in the CT department. Responsibilities include preparing patients and examination rooms according to infection control practices, organizing and stocking work areas, verifying patient identification, explaining procedures, and obtaining clinical history. The extern will assist patients with preparation and transfers, transport patients, and utilize radiology computer systems for requisitions and patient information. The role also involves reviewing medical records, positioning patients for various CT exams under direct supervision, and ensuring accurate documentation in SmartChart, RIS, and PACS. The extern must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) (needs to be obtained within 120 days).
  • Registered Technologist (RT) registration issued by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (needs to be obtained within 120 days).
  • CT Registered with the ARRT (needs to be obtained within 18 months).
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Radiologic Technology.
  • IL hires must be students from an accredited radiology program and in 2nd year of clinical training.
  • Anticipated completion, as verified by program director, from a Radiography program that is accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT.
  • Successful completion and documentation of clinical competencies and associated academic course work in the following areas: Chest, Abdomen, Spine, Cranial and Facial, Upper Extremity, Lower Extremity, Thorax, IVP, and GI procedures to include Upper GI, Small Bowel, Lower GI, and Gall Bladder.
  • Successful completion and documentation of academic course work in the following areas of study: Patient Care and Basic Radiation Safety and Protection.
  • Must possess good communication and patient care skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supports imaging technologists with preparation of patient and examination room prior to, during, and following imaging procedures in accordance with established infection control practices.
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, and maintaining equipment.
  • Verifies patient identification using two identifiers and communicates with patients to explain procedures, obtain clinical history, confirm acknowledgment of patients' understanding and address any questions about the imaging procedure.
  • Assists patient in preparation for exam and transferring patients to and from exam rooms.
  • Independently transports patients to other areas of the facility as required.
  • Uses the radiology computer systems to generate requisitions, check schedules, and obtain pertinent patient information.
  • Reviews patients medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders, obtains necessary clinical information from patients, and compares requisitions to physicians' orders to ensure exam accuracy.
  • Positions patients and selects exposure factors for various CT exams following accepted radiation protection and safety practices under the direct supervision of a licensed radiographer.
  • Ensures that images and other patient records are accurately documented, following approved workflows, in SmartChart, RIS and PACS in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
