About The Position

The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (CULLS) seeks motivated and highly-engaged student employees interested in a challenging and dynamic customer service work environment. Library Assistants are the first point of contact most patrons have with the University Libraries system and take care of most of the day-to-day duties associated with library operations. Under direct supervision, Library Assistants work with University Libraries staff and students in a team environment to: Assist Pictorial and Conservation Archivists with the processing of pictorial materials, identifying nitrate film, and supporting mitigation efforts to prepare these archival resources for digitization. The Student Library Assistant II will gain professional archival experience with photographic content and will follow archival policies and best practices for handling unique, fragile, and rare materials. The position may also assist with basic research and reference inquiries, help train and supervise new student employees, and participate in special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM
  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count)
  • If Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
  • Enrolled in a degree-seeking program at UNM (undergraduate or graduate) for at least 6 credit hours during the current semester.
  • If Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with or interest in photographic materials.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while taking on increasing responsibility.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify cellulose nitrate film.
  • Work-study preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Inventorying pictorial collections and identifying nitrate film.
  • Performing complex processing of nitrate film collection items, requiring a high degree of responsibility, independent judgment, and attention to detail.
  • Assisting Pictorial and Conservation archivists in mitigating damage to nitrate film.
  • Maintaining meticulous records of nitrate film identified and mitigated.
  • Participating in additional ongoing projects as assigned.
