This student worker position falls within the Community Service Literacy Program (CSLP). Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs. GCU maintains a partnership with Hope Women’s Center located at 5608 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ, 85018. Hope Women’s Center offers free life skills classes, mentoring, job training, and programs for expectant mothers, mothers, and children. The CSLP student worker’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of Hope Women’s Center; however, CSLP student workers may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring). This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). Community services are defined as services which are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their need. These services must be open and accessible to the community. As an FWS-CSLP approved position, its services will be offered to non-GCU community members (i.e., local residents).

  • Care for children ages 0 – 5 while mothers use Hope Women’s Center services
  • Greet English- and Spanish-speaking visitors and answer their questions
  • Provide bilingual support to courses taught in English
  • Provide administrative and classroom technology support
  • Assist as needed
  • Have passion and willingness to help others succeed
  • Possess strong ethics, integrity, and sense of responsibility
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s program or Master’s program
  • Retain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University
  • Previous mentoring experience
  • Ability to speak a second language
