Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (up to August 30, 2026 with a possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $6,500 - $7,368/Mon. DUTIES: Responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of a Longyear Diamond Wireline LF230 Drilling Rig and associated support equipment. Ensures that the rig and associated drilling equipment are operated in a safe and non-destructive manner and ensure that appropriate maintenance is performed before, during, and after drilling operations are conducted so that scientific research samples can be collected. Tasks include documenting and logging equipment operating hours; conducting inspection of the drilling rig and subsystems at appropriate intervals to ensure that they are in good and safe working order; ensuring that appropriate maintenance is performed at intervals that are consistent with manufacturer recommendations and ensuring that proper lubricants are available on-site and are used in the performance of periodic servicing; identifying and documenting evidence of excess wear and ensuring, to the extent possible, that maintenance/repair/replacement is performed prior to failure; maintaining an inventory of maintenance and repair parts and ensuring that required parts are on site when and as needed; monitoring the operation of the rig to ensure that the rig and its support equipment is operated within manufacturers recommended parameters. When repairs are performed, oversees the repair process, whether performed by drilling staff or by trained specialists with the tools, knowledge, and experience to properly perform those repairs. Travels and drives university vehicles to and from vendors in Kahului, as well as the port in Kahului, to procure and receive appropriate supplies and spares to be used on the drill rig. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Associate's Degree from an accredited community college in diamond wireline core drilling engineering related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and an additional two (2) years of experience may substitute for an Associate's Degree.). EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years working with LF230 diamond wireline coring drill rig (or similar rig with deep drilling capabilities) and associated support equipment during drilling operations. Experience with drilling in hard rock (basalt), rather than in sedimentary basins. Includes at least one (1) year of experience with drilling operations achieving a depth of >1.5 km. KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of drilling operations and working parameters of an LF230 diamond wireline coring drill rig and associated support equipment. Familiar with required tools and processes required to perform maintenance and repair of gasoline/diesel engines, hydraulic machinery, and support equipment associated with diamond wireline drilling. ABILITIES & SKILLS: Ability to safely operate and maintain a forklift/Gradall. Ability to perform routine welding tasks. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must have received forklift operator's certification and maintain throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds over a distance of 100 meters assisted, multiple times during a working 12-hour shift. Must be able to work either a day or night 12-hour shift as needed during drilling operations. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Familiar with diamond wireline core drilling practices. Experience on the LF230 drill rig (or similar) as floor hand or derrick man.
