About The Position

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office seeks to hire part-time Crossing Guards to work under the supervision of the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department. The Crossing Guard will be responsible for assisting and protecting school children crossing at a busy intersection to ensure the children cross the street properly and safely. The Crossing Guard (x2) will be assigned to Mannheim Middle School, located at 2600 Hyde Park Avenue, Melrose Park, Leyden Township. The specific assignment will require the crossing guard to assist the children at the intersection of Hyde Park Avenue & Nevada Avenue or the intersection of Hyde Park Avenue & Drummond from the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during the school year. Work hours may be subject to change based on when school is in session, or other factors. The ideal candidate must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) test certificate, be able to stand and walk for the entire shift without assistance, be able to tolerate exposure to all types of weather conditions and pass pre-employment processing, to include a background check. The position of crossing guard is a part-time position and is paid at an hourly rate of $17.73 per hour. Additionally, the crossing guard is enrolled in and contributes to the Cook County Pension Fund during employment.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) test certificate.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Required to be capable of be able to stand and walk for the entire shift without assistance, be able to tolerate exposure to all types of weather conditions.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment processing, to include a background check.
  • Must live within a 15-minute driving radius of Mannheim Middle School

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of all children at assigned post.
  • Stop traffic to ensure the safety of school children and other pedestrians crossing at designated intersections.
  • Enter the intersection prior to the first child and remain there until the last is safely across.
  • Wear safety vest and use handheld stop sign to control traffic flow.
  • Signal to pedestrians indicating when streets are safe to cross.
  • Guide and assist children and other pedestrians across intersections.
  • Maintain order among children as they approach the intersection.
  • Report traffic violations to supervisor, providing information on vehicle's license number, make, and model.
