About The Position

The position involves maintaining control of children and vehicular traffic at crossing sites to ensure that children cross safely at designated locations. The crossing guard will direct the actions of children at street intersections, record license numbers of vehicles that disregard traffic signals, and report any infractions to the police. Additionally, the guard will observe vehicles and pedestrians in the area of school crosswalks to report any suspicious activity. The role requires the ability to notify supervisors of uncooperative or abusive children and to follow all safety regulations, policies, and procedures. The crossing guard is expected to provide exceptional customer service to promote a positive image and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the community and the location of important buildings.
  • Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to report and record them clearly and completely.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly to emergency situations.
  • Good general intelligence and emotional stability.
  • Ability to tactfully interact with the public, especially children.
  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Physically able to perform the duties of a crossing guard during any weather conditions.
  • Ability to read English and interpret documents such as safety rules, instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence in English.
  • Ability to speak effectively to children, parents, and school officials.
  • Must attend a mandatory School Crossing Guard class.

Responsibilities

  • Direct actions of children at street intersections to ensure safe crossing.
  • Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to the police.
  • Observe vehicles and pedestrians in the area of school crosswalks to report suspicious vehicles or activity.
  • Notify supervisors of uncooperative or abusive children.
  • Follow all safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Report all unsafe conditions to the field supervisor immediately or by the end of the shift.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to promote a positive image and constructive working environment.
