About The Position

The Critical Care Transport EMT at Mercyhealth is responsible for providing high-quality critical care and transportation for critically ill or injured patients to appropriate medical facilities. This role requires adherence to established standards and guidelines, ensuring patient safety and effective communication within the emergency department. The EMT will engage in patient care, documentation, and quality improvement initiatives while participating in educational outreach and maintaining a clean and professional work environment.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a busy 911 system and ALS experience; preferred 5 years of experience.
  • Previous Critical Care transport experience preferred.
  • National Registry Certificate Required.
  • EMT License in State of Practice is required.
  • Dual State of Illinois and Wisconsin licensure required within 90 days.
  • Current certifications in BLS/CPR.
  • NIMS Training IS 100, 200, 700, 800 and Hazmat within 90 days.
  • EVOC Driving course completion within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides pre-hospital basic life support care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility; maintains thorough patient care documentation in a timely manner.
  • Practices within his/her scope of practice as defined by the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth.
  • Maintains competency in knowledge and psychomotor skills by participating in ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences.
  • Communicates educational needs to the program leadership.
  • Provides patient care as assigned and per routine, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.
  • Performs basic skills and procedures as approved by Mercyhealth.
  • Maintains documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and safety training.
  • Attends educational programs as required by the Medical Director.
  • Participates regularly in departmental activities, simulation, projects and committees.
  • Maintains awareness of current issues related to pre-hospital care through participation in professional activities.
  • Clearly communicates program goals and objectives.
  • Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Mercyhealth.
  • Responsible for reporting medical equipment failures and taking initial steps to ensure repair of equipment as directed.
  • Maintains adequate supplies within program/ambulances to deliver patient care.
  • Assists with the routine maintenance of the ambulance, equipment and facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional appearance.
  • Functions as a CCTT ground team member by attending pre-call briefings and post-call debriefings.
  • Assists in pre-call activities, including radio, navigational, and weather observation.
  • Complies with safety standards to assure safety of self, medical personnel, patient, and equipment.
  • Conducts safety briefings as needed.
  • Participates regularly in Mercyhealth meetings, activities, projects and committees.
  • Participates in patient and referring institution follow-up and planned outreach marketing and education activities.
  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment.
  • Processes orders in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Answers the telephone and call lights appropriately, providing information or relaying messages to patients and staff.
  • Maintains and orders supplies, including scanning, stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.
  • Performs venipuncture, IV access, 12-lead acquisition, blood glucose analysis, and CPR/Lucas as ordered/directed.
  • Assists with splinting applications by gathering needed supplies.
  • Transports non-monitored patients to in-patient units.
  • Floats to outlying Mercyhealth facilities based on identified needs/staffing models.
  • Directs visitors to patients' rooms.
  • Maintains medical records of current patients.
  • Processes patient charges and orders supplies as needed.
