About The Position

Position Summary: The Registered Nurse – Interfacility Transport provides advanced and critical care during interfacility transports for high-acuity patients from initial contact through handoff at the accepting facility. Working within the State of Montana scope of practice and Bozeman Health Emergency Services protocols, the Registered Nurse partners with the Paramedic teammate and EMT/AEMT to assess, treat, and continuously monitor patients while maintaining a safe transport environment. The role ensures clear communication with dispatch and clinical teams, completes accurate and timely documentation, and maintains consistent readiness of the ambulance and transport equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Current State of Montana Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).
  • Valid Montana driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years of RN experience in an emergency department and/or intensive care unit.
  • Previous interfacility or prehospital critical care transport experience.
  • Advanced nursing certifications: Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), or CCRN (Adult).
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification at the EMT or AEMT level.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) and/or VFIS driver training.
  • FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) training: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800.
  • Completion of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • Completion of the S.T.A.B.L.E. course.
  • Completion of the Difficult Airway Course.
  • Experience with quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) and transport EMR systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Critical Care Transport Paramedic/Critical Care Paramedic partner to establish the plan of care; coordinate and deliver advanced/critical care interventions per protocol and medical direction.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, interpret diagnostics, and continually reassess patient status; adjust interventions to meet transport goals and changing conditions.
  • Administer medications, titrate critical infusions, manage advanced airways, provide ventilatory support, and perform approved procedures within scope and authorization.
  • Prepare, load, secure, and monitor patients and required transport equipment with the team; verify equipment readiness and security prior to movement.
  • Use communication systems and GPS to coordinate with dispatch, team members, and receiving facilities; follow radio and telephone etiquette standards.
  • Complete accurate, timely, and thorough electronic patient care reports (ePCR) and transport documentation; deliver concise, structured handoffs to receiving staff.
  • Maintain ambulance and equipment readiness through daily check-offs, cleaning, restocking, and function testing; document deficiencies and arrange service as needed.
  • Monitor weather, road, and safety conditions; conduct risk assessments and fatigue scoring; participate in pre-briefs and debriefs.
  • Participate in QA/QI activities, skills maintenance, drills, and continuing education; incorporate evidence-based practice updates.
  • Serve as a clinical role model and resource to internal and external partners; provide professional customer service and education as requested.
  • Perform base duties and additional tasks as assigned to support transport operations.
