About The Position

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Crisis Intervention Specialist to join our team part-time on an as-needed (PRN) basis. This role is essential in supporting individuals during moments of emotional crisis, promoting recovery through trauma-informed care, and connecting people to vital community resources. Chestnut Health Systems is a leading provider of integrated health care services. Since 1973, Chestnut has grown to more than 800 committed, compassionate employees providing substance use, mental health, and primary care treatment to patients in Illinois and Missouri. We provide fully integrated care for all our patients by combining behavioral health care services with our community-based primary care health centers. Chestnut also conducts research and training throughout the U.S.A. In this role you will be based in your home and going out on crisis calls when they are called in. All hours are evening, and weekend on a PRN basis. Base Pay for this role is $21.35 - $24.31 , with pay differentials for all evening and weekend shifts worked. Plus additional base shift pay and location pay depending on shift.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and five years’ supervised mental health experience; Or a bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, education, psychology or related human service field; Or a bachelor’s degree in any other field with 2 years’ supervised clinical experience in a mental health setting; Or a certificate of psychiatric rehabilitation from a DHS-approved program plus a high school diploma or equivalent and 2 years’ experience in providing mental health services; Or a Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) in good standing with the State of Illinois.
  • Valid driver’s license, private auto insurance, and insurability.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and electronic medical records (EMR).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver crisis intervention services, including assessments, safety planning, and referrals.
  • Complete documentation promptly—100% of assessments and safety plans at time of service; 80% of progress notes within 24 hours.
  • Support individuals through court-ordered assessments, group services (e.g., anger management, parenting), and case management.
  • Use recovery-oriented language and practices that emphasize hope, empowerment, and self-direction.
  • Collaborate with hospitals, law enforcement, and natural support systems to maintain strong community relationships.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Provide after-hours crisis support as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold the organization’s standards for customer service excellence.
