The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is dedicated to investigating cases of individuals who die under various circumstances within New York City, including criminal violence, accidents, suicides, and other suspicious situations. The core mission of OCME is to protect public health and serve impartial justice through forensic science and medicine. The office aims to provide answers and support to families and communities during their times of profound need. As a Criminalist II in the Forensic Biology department, the selected candidate will work under the general direction of the Assistant Directors and specifically under the supervision of a Criminalist, Level IV. The role involves conducting scientific analyses on physical evidence related to criminal cases. Responsibilities include accurately locating, recognizing, and describing physical evidence, performing technical reviews of casework, ensuring the integrity of evidence, maintaining records of examinations, interpreting DNA test results, and preparing reports that reflect the results of scientific analyses. The Criminalist II will also engage in quality assurance and quality control programs, participate in training programs, and stay updated on emerging technological advances in forensic biology. The position requires a strong foundation in forensic science and the ability to work collaboratively within a team while maintaining high standards of accuracy and integrity in all analyses and reports. The Criminalist II will also be expected to testify in legal settings regarding the results of scientific investigations and participate in various special assignments as directed.
