About The Position

The Criminal Investigator III position within the Colorado Department of Revenue's Liquor & Tobacco Division is responsible for enforcing Colorado's liquor and tobacco laws. This role involves conducting investigations, compliance checks, and inspections to ensure public safety and regulatory compliance. The investigator will work as a certified Peace Officer, engaging in both administrative and criminal investigations, and will be tasked with making arrests, conducting interviews, and preparing detailed reports for prosecution.

Requirements

  • Two years of full-time professional investigative experience in a regulatory environment or a Bachelor's degree in a related field with current valid Colorado POST Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and physical/psychological evaluation.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections and compliance checks of liquor and tobacco licensed businesses.
  • Plan and execute investigations of alleged violations of Colorado Liquor and Tobacco Statutes.
  • Conduct interviews with witnesses, suspects, and the general public to gather evidence.
  • Utilize databases to support investigations and track evidence.
  • Make physical arrests when necessary during investigations.
  • Conduct covert operations and surveillance to gather evidence for prosecutions.
  • Respond to complaints and investigate alleged violations of liquor and tobacco codes.
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports for criminal and administrative cases.
  • Testify in civil and criminal court and administrative hearings.
  • Provide training to local authorities and stakeholders on liquor and tobacco regulations.
