About The Position

Primarily responsible for performing cremation services, adhering to the guidelines published in the Mount Auburn Crematory Manual, defined below and as part of the Cemetery Services Team.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • At least five years of experience as a Crematory Operator or Funeral Director
  • Must be knowledgeable of the Universal Precautions relating to contagious diseases, biological hazards, and other safety precautions
  • Must be knowledgeable of all Cemetery, EPA, and OSHA rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of the crematory
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to handle stressful situations, including tragic death, in a professional and empathetic manner
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently
  • Self-starter with strong initiative and ability to work independently
  • Patient, energetic, creative and flexible as work demands
  • Lift, push, or pull caskets or cremation containers containing human remains with or without assistance from vehicles, onto and off carts, church trucks or crematory charger. Move caskets and cremation containers from vehicles various rooms as well as Bigelow Chapel
  • Involves moving in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments for extended periods including, remaining in a stationary position and/or performing activities such as climbing, bending, twisting, reaching and pulling.
  • Ascends and descends stairs
  • Ascends and descends a ladder as to reach shelves containing files and supplies

Responsibilities

  • Performing all cremations and cremation related services including but not limited to:
  • The receipt and efficient storage of human remains in containers suitable for cremation
  • Safe operation of all cremation equipment
  • Timely processing of cremated remains and related paperwork
  • Strict adherence to the Mount Auburn Crematory Manual
  • Communicate with all funeral directors in a professional manner and assist with families at chapel or witness cremation services when needed
  • Work with members of the Cemetery Services Team in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the Crematory by:
  • Guide, train and advise back-up personnel in all required procedures
  • Review and recommend improved operating policies and procedures (regarding issues such as safety, personnel, and equipment needs) and ensure the proper implementation and maintenance of approved changes
  • Transport cremated remains along with all corresponding paperwork from the crematory to the main office in the Administration Building
  • Observe and follow all standard operating procedures
  • Effective use of radio communication equipment
  • Perform other duties assigned including speaking to groups about cremation or burial, meeting with families, assisting with set-up for chapel services, and organizing cars and traffic arriving for the various services
  • Required to work Saturdays or during off hours as necessary in response to individual customer requests
