About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services, is currently accepting applications for a part-time seasonal Creel Clerk. This position will conduct angler surveys for the Freshwater Fisheries and Hatcheries Division, Central Region Office in Howard County. The primary duties of the position will be to conduct angler interviews on the Gunpowder River Tailwater Fishery and Liberty Reservoir in Baltimore County. Angler surveys will be in 6-8 hour shifts from a pre-determined randomized schedule. The creel clerk will wait at boat ramps and other angler access sites and interview anglers following the completion of their fishing trip to collect catch, harvest, effort, and economic data for the respective fisheries. This candidate should be familiar with general fly-fishing and spin-fishing practices and be comfortable talking to the general public. Additional duties may include, but not limited to; assisting with biological field surveys, fish stocking, and facility/equipment maintenance. The nature of the position requires work to be conducted independently and will include early morning, late evening, holiday, and weekend hours. Expected weekly hours will be 30-40 depending on shift schedules.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school diploma or GED.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior fishing and/or fisheries experience
  • Experience conducting angler creel surveys
  • Experience in the identification and/or management of freshwater gamefish species specific to Central Maryland.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct angler interviews on the Gunpowder River Tailwater Fishery and Liberty Reservoir in Baltimore County.
  • Wait at boat ramps and other angler access sites and interview anglers following the completion of their fishing trip to collect catch, harvest, effort, and economic data for the respective fisheries.
  • Assist with biological field surveys.
  • Assist with fish stocking.
  • Assist with facility/equipment maintenance.

Benefits

  • Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.
  • As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.
  • The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits.
  • You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
  • Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
