About The Position

Farmer Mac seeks an accomplished, analytical, and personable professional with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in credit and lending to join its Corporate AgFinance team as a Credit Underwriter. This pivotal role is responsible for the comprehensive analysis, underwriting, and ongoing monitoring of both new and existing credit transactions, ensuring the highest standards of credit quality for Farmer Mac’s diverse client base. Position Summary This position offers significant exposure to complex transactions and opportunities for career growth within Farmer Mac’s expanding Corporate AgFinance division. You will work closely with a seasoned sales team to support the growth of Farmer Mac’s portfolio through multi-lender, structured cash flow transactions with corporate agribusiness and large vertically integrated production agriculture operations. The suitable candidate must be able to analyze the current, historical, and projected financial condition and repayment capacity of borrowers. Additionally, they will evaluate the validity of borrower business plans based on assessments of industry outlooks, competition, technology, management, and overall capital structure. The Credit Underwriter will have the opportunity to attend lender meetings and interact with arrangers during the credit assessment, documentation review, and execution of transactions. Suitable candidates must be a self-starter, able to work and complete various and recurring tasks timely and thoughtfully. Candidate must also be able to work with minimal supervision within one’s field of expertise and should be an active and efficient communicator. Who You Will Work With The Credit Underwriter will report directly to the Senior Director of Credit Underwriting and have regular interaction with Senior Managing Director and Head of Corporate AgFinance, Director of Capital Markets, Relationship Managers, Loan Operations, and Farmer Mac internal and external counsel. The position will also have a high degree of interaction with Farmer Mac Credit Approval Committee, including the Vice President - Chief Credit Officer. Where You Will Work The position is remote with preference for candidates in Washington, D.C. and Denver, Colorado metro areas. Farmer Mac embraces a Presence with Purpose work environment, which allows for flexibility of work location while providing the opportunity for teams to come together in the office with purpose. Work outside of core hours may be required for planned and unplanned activities to complete time sensitive projects or to attend off-site meetings or events.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative credit analysis, enterprise valuation, and legal documentation review.
  • Experience with cash flow lending, ideally within the food and agribusiness sector.
  • Advanced analytical skills for addressing complex, non-standardized credit scenarios.
  • Ability to handle deal opportunities largely autonomously, including sensitizing financial models, calculation financial ratios, reviewing third-party reports, and strong understanding of loan documents.
  • Knowledge of industry dynamics and KPIs within the food and agribusiness sectors.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Moody’s Analytics, Moody’s CreditLens, and Salesforce.
  • Demonstrated work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to manage multiple tasks independently and efficiently.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or an equivalent/relevant program.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of credit underwriting experience, preferably with formal credit training.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary contributor in the underwriting and portfolio management process, acting as a direct point of contact for clients during structuring and underwriting phases.
  • Conduct thorough reviews and analyses of complex transactions involving large corporate food and agribusiness entities, as well as vertically integrated production agriculture operations.
  • Evaluate a range of deal structures, including cash flow-based loans (e.g., leveraged loans, term loan B), asset-based lending facilities, and other collateral-dependent instruments.
  • Assess financial condition and repayment capacity of borrowers, utilizing historical, current, and projected data.
  • Identify and articulate key risks and mitigants associated with each credit request.
  • Oversee risk rating assessments and ongoing portfolio management, including covenant compliance, financial performance, and maturity tracking.
  • Monitor credit quality and ensure accurate risk ratings.
  • Prepare and deliver credit presentations, providing recommendations for new or incremental credit exposure to the Credit Committee.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of financial markets, economic conditions, and competitive dynamics.

  • The typical starting salary range for this position is between $110,000 - $140,000, although wages can vary based on experience and geography, plus performance-based bonus and equity-based awards.
  • Individual compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience.
