About The Position

The Crater/Material Coordinator/Shipper is responsible for fabricating wooden crates, skids, or boxes and packing items such as coils, sheet metal parts, and tooling. This role involves loading, unloading, and moving materials within or near the plant, yard, or work site, as well as preparing coils/units for shipment. The position requires following work orders or oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved, operating industrial trucks or electric hoists, and ensuring compliance with shipping orders.

Requirements

  • High school education; equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Working knowledge of MAPICS software preferred.
  • Forklift license required; must be able to obtain within three (3) months.

Responsibilities

  • Reads work order or follows oral instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved.
  • Opens containers.
  • Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, trays, racks, and shelves by hand.
  • Loads materials into carts or other containers.
  • Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated area.
  • Secures lifting attachments to materials and conveys load to destination.
  • Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet.
  • Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on boxes, crates, or other containers.
  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together.
  • Lifts heavy objects by hand or with power hoist, and cleans work area, machines, and equipment to assist machine operators.
  • Operates industrial truck or electric hoist to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
  • Removes scrap materials for proper disposal.
  • Sorts and distributes shop floor paperwork to appropriate personnel.
  • Wears all required PPE.
  • Trains new or existing employee, if necessary.
  • Reads shop floor paperwork, shipping notices, and other specifications, and inspects product to determine size and shape of container, materials to be used, and types of supports and braces to be used.
  • Lays out dimensions with measuring tape and pencil/pen.
  • Saws materials to size using various machinery.
  • Assembles materials using various air tools.
  • Places product on bottom of container or skid either by hand or by using the crane.
  • Bolts coils/parts to bottom of container or skid.
  • Wraps product with packing material.
  • Wraps and tightens metal bands around coil/material on skid.
  • Builds crate around coils.
  • Nails cover on crate.
  • Wraps and tightens metal bands around crate.
  • Fills out identification labels, prepares stamped metal labels for coated coils, and signs-off shop floor paperwork.
  • Inserts identification label in plastic bag and attaches bag to the crate.
  • Repairs broken crates.
  • Counts items to be packed to ensure compliance with shipping orders.
  • Weighs loaded crate, if trained in forklift operation and Material Coordinator is not available.
  • Moves container to shipping area, and moves lumber, paper, and other wrapping supplies to crating area, if trained in forklift operation and Material Coordinator is not available.
  • Replaces saw blades when dull.
  • Uses crane if necessary to move skid bottoms from table to the floor or to move coils from floor to the skid.
  • Cleans up work area at the end of shift.
  • Dumps scrap materials from wheelbarrow.
  • Changes dust collector bag as needed.
  • Determines method of shipment.
  • Communicates directly with shippers to coordinate shipments.
  • Affixes shipping labels on packed cartons or stencils identifying shipping information on cartons.
  • Assembles wooden or cardboard containers or selects preassembled containers.
  • Inserts items into containers.
  • Nails covers on wooden crates and binds containers with metal tape.
  • Stamps, stencils, or glues identifying information and shipping instructions onto crates or containers.
  • Posts weights and shipping charges, and affixes postage.
  • Examines outgoing shipments to ensure shipments meet specifications.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Operates tier lift truck or uses handtruck to move, convey, or hoist shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage or work area.
  • Responsible for reporting work related injuries and near misses to supervision.
  • Responsible for wearing all required PPE and following applicable safety/environmental rules.
  • Responsible for correcting or reporting unsafe conditions observed within the plant.
