REPORTS TO: Crane/Rigging Manager and/or Foreman SUPERVISES: Crane operators and riggers AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: Promote through example and foster the continuous development of a work environment compliant with all applicable regulations, policies, and/or standards concerning hazard/loss control, environmental responsibilities, and security and health concerns. Oversee the day-to-day work performance of crane operators and riggers. Motivate direct reports, maintain a high level of morale, and minimize confrontation. Provide continuous on-the-job training for all subordinates as part of a commitment to the concept of continuous improvement through safe efficiency. Monitor timekeeping and verify labor charges. Encourage effective communication and flexibility within the team and gain an understanding of their needs and problems. Provide feedback to the Crane/Rigging Manager and Foremen on performance and recruitment requirements. Ensure that good housekeeping and control of rigging material and tools are practiced at all work stations. Set and monitor time goals for all tasks. QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5 years of experience as a crane operator/rigger preferably in a shipyard environment. Must be familiar with operation and safe uses of transporters. Knowledge and understanding of all applicable OSHA, ANSI, and ASME regulations and standards concerning crane operating and rigging. Good people management skills. Computer skills (especially Outlook and Excel) preferred. Must meet physical requirements for crane operators specified in the ASME B30.2 standard. Previous supervisory experience is preferred but not required. Must be willing to work any assigned shift and overtime when workload demands it. Must have the ability to maintain a calm, thoughtful demeanor when faced with pressure situations. Must be able to adapt to and adjust the daily work schedule according to changing circumstances as they present themselves. TOOLS: Must be familiar with and be capable of providing instruction/guidance in use and care of rigging tools such as chain hoists, wire rope slings, nylon straps, shackles, spreader beams, snatch blocks, beam clamps, plate dogs, etc. DIRECTION EXERCISED: Will direct the work of the crane operators and riggers based on the day-to-day requirements of the project specifications. DISCRETION EXERCISED: Adherence to budgets and implementation of schedules including providing evaluation of work performance of direct reports. LIAISES WITH: All other crafts, trades, and sub-contractors through clear communication as to what support the Crane/Rigging Dept. will need to provide. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time. Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.
