About The Position

Under direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work; assist skilled trades and crafts workers as assigned; operate delivery vehicles to deliver variety of educational supplies, equipment, furniture, mail and other supplies to various locations throughout the district; receive, fill and file requisitions for school supplies. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Craftsworker I is the entry level classification in the Craftsworker series; and incumbents perform general maintenance and semi-skilled duties in several trades areas.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: Safety procedures and practices used in maintenance work.
  • Common building maintenance activities, tools, materials and methods related to glazing, roofing, masonry, carpentry, painting, heating and air conditioning repair, electrical service and plumbing.
  • Mechanical principles related to motors.
  • Basic record keeping methods.
  • Operation of a variety of hand and power tools used in the construction and mechanical trades.
  • Delivery and receipt procedures.
  • California motor vehicle laws related to truck driving.
  • Operation of medium and heavy duty trucks, forklift and other warehouse equipment.
  • Health and safety procedures and defensive driving techniques.
  • Proper methods of lifting, loading and storing heavy materials and supplies.
  • General warehouse organization and operations.
  • Ability to: Perform semiskilled maintenance and repair work not requiring full journey level experience.
  • Operate hand and power tools and shop equipment properly and safely.
  • Demonstrate mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • Assist skilled trades and craftsworkers and participate in work crews as assigned.
  • Perform simple repairs independently.
  • Complete work on schedule.
  • Maintain records related to work performed.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Deliver and distribute school supplies, mail, furniture, publications and other materials to various district locations.
  • Travel a prearranged route and make special deliveries as needed.
  • Lift and load objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Receive, fill and distribute supply orders to school sites.
  • Operate a power driven fork lift and other warehouse equipment.
  • Drive medium and heavy trucks safely and defensively.
  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Training and Experience: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of general experience in building maintenance or construction work and one year of warehousing, store keeping or delivery experience.
  • Licenses: Possession of valid Class III California Driver's License and the ability to meet and maintain qualification for district vehicle coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Perform semi-skilled trades tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of district equipment and facilities.
  • Make routine and emergency repairs and adjustments to school buildings and facilities.
  • Assist in remodeling or building storage and work areas.
  • Install doors, framework, drywalls and siding.
  • Repair and overhaul sprinkler systems.
  • Repair doors and windows and make simple installation of hardware.
  • Straighten and repair lockers.
  • Repair desks, chairs and other furniture and equipment.
  • Remove and replace faucets and fixtures and replace washers and gaskets.
  • Perform routine plumbing duties, including the installation and repair of piping, various fittings and valves.
  • Clear clogged lines.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Build forms and mix, pour and finish concrete.
  • Install and repair fencing and blacktop.
  • Replace parts, lubricate and inspect motors, pumps, heaters and other equipment.
  • Perform general vehicle maintenance.
  • Repair roofs and check drainage.
  • Maintain records related to work performed.
  • Assist in the repair and maintenance of heating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Repair and maintain small engines, power equipment and tools.
  • Trim and top trees.
  • Load and deliver a wide variety of supplies and equipment including furniture, mail, instructional materials, publications and food supplies to various locations in the district.
  • Pick up United States mail at the Post Office and distribute to school sites; take outgoing mail to the Post Office according to prearranged schedules.
  • Receive, fill and distribute supply orders from school sites.
  • Receive and store supplies and materials from vendors in accordance with established warehouse procedures.
  • Operate district delivery vehicles, forklift and electric aislestacker.
  • Observe established health and safety procedures and defensive driving practices.
  • Maintain routine records related to work performed. Communicate with district personnel regarding supply orders and schedules.
  • Assure proper operation of delivery vehicles and warehouse equipment.
  • Assist as needed in general warehouse duties.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
