About The Position

The Park Ranger Trainee position is an entry-level training classification within the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) system. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and grow within the field of natural resource management and law enforcement. As a Park Ranger Trainee, you will attend a Colorado Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) certified law enforcement academy. Upon successful completion of this training, you will be certified as a Colorado Peace Officer, which grants you the official duties and authority necessary to perform your role effectively. After certification, you will undergo additional training that includes both classroom education and field exercises, aimed at providing you with the knowledge and practical experience required for successful performance in the role and to support your career progression within CPW. During your first year, you will participate in various training programs that cover essential topics such as park operations, state laws, rules, regulations, and park management techniques. You will also engage in educational and interpretive activities aimed at disseminating information about park management to various stakeholders, including schools and civic groups. The position requires a commitment to understanding the responsibilities of a Park Ranger and representing the Division in a professional manner. You will apply natural resource management plans and participate in various certification training, including Wilderness First Responder and Swift Water Rescue. The role involves performing patrols using various vehicles, including boats and Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs), and enforcing park laws and regulations. You will also be responsible for investigating alleged law violations and working under the leadership of a commissioned officer. This position requires a willingness to accept an assignment to a State Park and remain there for a minimum of two years after certification. Overall, this position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the conservation and management of Colorado's natural resources while developing your skills in law enforcement and park management.
