About The Position

Under the direction of the Civil Division Court Security Supervisor, the Court Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Allen County court buildings, staff, detainees, and the public. Duties include operating building entry security systems, monitoring behavior, conducting arrests or investigations as needed, transporting detainees, and acting as court bailiff. This position is covered by due process as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Requirements

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Be a United States citizen.
  • Be at least 21 years of age to be eligible for appointment as a Special Deputy.
  • Have prior experience in law enforcement, court security, military service, or other government building security (preferred but not required).
  • Meet all departmental hiring and retention standards, including successful completion of written, oral, medical, and psychological examinations.
  • Hold a valid driver's license for detainee transport.
  • Be able to qualify with a department-issued handgun and requalify annually.
  • Be able to obtain certification in CPR and AED.
  • Be eligible for training and swearing in as a Special Deputy by the Allen County Sheriff's Department.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of court building security procedures, law enforcement practices, and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Understand county building layouts and boundaries.
  • Follow all written and verbal orders and directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive departmental information.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  • Speak clearly and distinctly in person, over the radio, and by telephone.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of radio frequencies, codes, and limitations.
  • Interact with tact and professionalism, showing sensitivity to ethics, cultural diversity, gender, and disabilities.
  • Operate and maintain assigned vehicles, uniforms, and equipment.
  • Use a computer terminal and properly collect and preserve evidence.
  • Act quickly and effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Use standard law enforcement tools, including a handgun, handcuffs, taser, and electronic detection devices.
  • Maintain physical readiness to perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to self or others.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the safety and security of Allen County Courts, employees, the public, and inmates within designated county buildings.
  • Operates building entry security systems to screen individuals and items entering the facility.
  • Monitors and operates security camera systems to maintain awareness of facility activity.
  • Responds to security threats and emergencies, taking necessary action to control situations and ensure safety.
  • Acts as a liaison to the public by answering questions and providing direction within court facilities.
  • Provides security for Allen County Preservation Trust events and other assigned county functions.
  • Manages building key inventory and ensures adherence to facility access protocols.
  • Performs bailiff duties during court proceedings, including maintaining order, monitoring conduct, and addressing disturbances.
  • Escorts jurors and provides courtroom security, including arranging meals, accommodations, and processing juror payroll.
  • Delivers court documents and ensures secure handling of judicial correspondence.
  • Prepares court calendars and coordinates detainee appearances for hearings.
  • Completes all required reports, logs, and documentation accurately while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Transports detainees between courtrooms and the Allen County Jail, ensuring proper procedures and documentation.
  • Conducts searches of detainees and members of the public for weapons and contraband.
  • Maintains security and order within the jail facility; monitors detainee behavior, conducts observation checks, and escorts inmates as required.
  • Enforces federal, state, and local laws in coordination with the Allen County Sheriff's Department.
  • Performs arrests and initiates investigations to protect the public and uphold legal standards.
  • Secures, logs, and places items into evidence according to legal procedures.
  • Collaborates with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to exchange information and support coordinated operations.
  • Attends required in-service training and maintains certifications in firearms, taser, defensive tactics, CPR, and AED.
  • Maintains physical fitness, appearance, and uniform in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles, equipment, and supplies in service-ready condition.
  • Provides money escorts for the Clerk's Office at least twice daily.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
