About The Position

The Lawrence, Kansas, Municipal Court is seeking to fill the part-time position of Court Security Officer. The Lawrence Municipal Court adjudicates misdemeanor offenses and city code violations, and has a high case load. The Court Security Officer’s primary responsibilities include providing security for the Municipal Court, including the courtroom, lobbies, and office areas, as well as maintaining order during court and assuring that proceedings run smoothly. The Court Security Officer shall be permitted to carry a firearm, in accordance with city policy, while on duty. Additional responsibilities include performing fingerprinting services, serving as a courier for the court, picking up documents from the Douglas County Jail, transporting records to and from other city offices, making daily bank deposits, and assisting the Municipal Court Judge and Court Manager, as needed. This position will involve significant interaction with the public, and the successful candidate must demonstrate good judgment and common sense. This is a part-time position, working generally 20-30 hours weekly.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade is required.
  • Must have recent experience in Law Enforcement or Court Security
  • Must be legally qualified to carry a firearm.
  • Must be of lawful age and not otherwise prohibited by any Federal or State law from possessing a firearm, and must also provide his or her own approved firearm and appropriate holster.
  • Must attend and successfully complete a basic firearms training course before assuming the duties of Court Security Officer for the City of Lawrence, and maintain qualification pursuant to city policy and applicable law.
  • Must attend de-escalation training, scheduled by the Court Manager.
  • An Officer may be subject to a medical examination or inquiry as long as the examination or inquiry is job-related and consistent with business necessity.
  • Must have the physical ability necessary for walking and standing for prolonged periods of time, repetitive lifting of packages up to 50 pounds, restraining or removing disruptive individuals, and chasing fleeing subjects, on occasion.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must pass a background check, post-offer physical and drug screen, and mental health evaluations, as appropriate.
