About The Position

Under general supervision performs work of considerable difficulty in making verbatim stenographic records of legal proceedings and transcribing same; performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience as a court reporter, OR any combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Arizona Court Reporting Certification.
  • Considerable knowledge of: Civil, criminal, juvenile, domestic relations, grand jury, and mental health dispositions and probate proceedings
  • Considerable knowledge of: Court operations and docketing procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of: Statutes and Rules of Procedure pertaining to Court Reporters
  • Considerable knowledge of: Rules, regulations, and statutes pertaining to the distribution and filing of transcripts
  • Considerable knowledge of: Principles and techniques of computerized stenotype, archiving and retrieval of steno notes, and transcript production and delivery of both paper and electronic transcripts
  • Considerable knowledge of: State and federal rules of procedure
  • Considerable knowledge of: Research techniques - online, library and telephonic
  • Considerable knowledge of: Operation of court reporting software and hardware, litigation support software, advances in technology
  • Considerable knowledge of: Current court issues regarding making the record
  • Considerable knowledge of: Ethical standards and court rules applicable to court reporting
  • Considerable knowledge of: Specialized and technical vocabulary, i.e. legal, medical, scientific, engineering, physics, and others
  • Considerable knowledge of: English grammar, punctuation and usage
  • Working knowledge of: Content, location, and use of reference materials, library indices, and legal citation systems
  • Working knowledge of: Rules, laws, policies, and practices pertaining to professional conduct and ethics
  • Working knowledge of: Activities of state and national court reporting associations
  • Working knowledge of: Procedures of other departments within the court system
  • Working knowledge of: Security practices within the court system
  • Working knowledge of: Equipment, computers, and software associated with the production and management of stenographic notes, transcripts, and official records
  • Ability to: Utilize computerized stenographic equipment to produce accurate records of court proceedings within established timeframes
  • Ability to: Work extended hours under stressful conditions
  • Ability to: Prepare and maintain well-organized manual and electronic files
  • Ability to: Prepare reports and present facts clearly, orally and in writing
  • Ability to: Remain impartial and detached during emotionally charged proceedings
  • Ability to: Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Ability to: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with judges, attorneys, court personnel, participants in litigation, other agencies and the public
  • Ability to: Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to: Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Uses computerized stenotype equipment to prepare verbatim records of legal proceedings
  • Prepares and distributes accurate transcripts in required format within specified timeframe
  • Reads back from court record during proceedings or prepares rough draft transcripts for court use
  • Maintains stenographic records in such a way that they are readily accessible for the period of time required by law
  • Purchases and maintains a personal reference library, and utilizes online reference sources
  • Purchases and maintains software, hardware and supplies necessary for the performance of court reporting
  • Hires support staff as necessary
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports
  • Performs related duties

Benefits

  • Relocation assistance up to $2,000.00
  • 60 hours banked vacation to be used immediately.
  • $1500.00 bonus at the beginning of employment and $1500.00 after one year of hire.
  • 2% incentive pay for other certifications such as Merit, Real Time Certification, and Registered Diplomate Reporter (RDR)
  • The Court will pay the Arizona Certification Renewal Fee every two years during the term of employment.
  • Additional transcript income estimated at $10,000-$20,000.00 per year.
