About The Position

Performs clerical work in support of assigned court proceedings. Duties include creating and maintaining accurate stenographic records of all court proceedings, including hearings, pleas, motions, and trials, and to properly maintain the records following the Rules of Civil Procedure Positions in this class perform routine transcript reconciliation and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer transcription questions; and maintain court proceedings documents and records. Essential Functions The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience performing clerical work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Must hold a current certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter through the Supreme Court of Texas, and must keep certification current
  • Knowledge and ability to apply correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, including legal and medical terminology; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the District Clerk's office and all parties involved in a case; knowledge of courtroom and legal terminology, and familiarity with courtroom procedures.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Provides readback of notes to the Court, counsel, the jury, and witnesses when required during the proceedings.
  • Keeps and maintains evidence, including written records and weapons, throughout the proceedings and upon completion file the evidence with the proper authorities.
  • Attends all sessions of court and take accurate stenographic notes of all court hearings and make a full record of the evidence when requested by the judge or any party to a case, together with all objections to the admissibility of the evidence, the rulings, and remarks of the court thereon.
  • Makes a full record of jury argument and voir dire examinations when requested to do so by the attorney for any party to a case, together with all objections to such arguments. The rulings and remarks of the court thereon.
  • Prepares official transcripts of all such evidence or other proceedings, or any portion thereof, subject to the laws of this state, these rules and the instructions of the presiding during the trial of the case.
  • Must perform real-time court reporting and have all necessary equipment and software for said court reporting.
  • Screens incoming call and visitors.
  • Designs and generate miscellaneous forms used in office or courtroom.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
