About The Position

The Court Liaison at Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center/HCPC at UTHealth Houston is responsible for coordinating and implementing the involuntary admission process for patients. This role ensures efficient and quality services from the initial intake admission to discharge, working closely with the court system and interdisciplinary teams to comply with state regulations and deliver quality treatment to involuntary patients.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of acute hospital or inpatient mental facility experience required.
  • Prior inpatient mental health commitment experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate new patient warrants every morning for accuracy.
  • Prepare involuntary list daily for Social Services Department Leadership Team.
  • Evaluate involuntary paperwork on new patient's charts each morning for psychiatrist's completion.
  • File paperwork at court daily and track court closings and holidays for compliance.
  • Communicate with psychiatrists to complete 2nd medical filings for involuntary status.
  • Coordinate with attorneys for continuances based on patient discharge status.
  • Notify psychiatrists about probable cause and final hearing dates.
  • Submit discharge drop letters to the court within 24 hours of discharge.
  • Maintain accurate account of all Certificate of Medical Examinations (CME) monthly for the Director and Assistant Director of Social Services.
  • Explain the involuntary process to patients and their families as requested.
  • Plan patient care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Consult with other departments for patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with departments to identify operational problems and develop solutions.
  • Work with healthcare team members to maintain a collaborative approach in patient care.
  • Ensure timeliness of paperwork, treatment, and discharge with psychiatrists and Social Service Clinicians.
  • Participate in education and implementation of the involuntary process with the Intake Department.
  • Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and ability to function under stress.
  • Maintain good working relationships within and outside the department.
  • Coordinate all phases of the involuntary process with team members during patient stay.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
