About The Position

The Massachusetts Trial Court is seeking a Court Interpreter for Suffolk County. This position is responsible for providing language access services to non-English speaking individuals involved in court matters. The role includes interpreting legal proceedings, translating official documents, and ensuring effective communication in the courtroom. The Trial Court is committed to fair and equal access to justice, and this position plays a crucial role in upholding that mission. The Court Interpreters Program is part of the Language Access and Court Records Department, which oversees services related to spoken language access for limited English proficient individuals and those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field.
  • Minimum of four years' experience in legal, technical, medical, or literary translation and/or interpretation.
  • Fully proficient in English and a foreign language.
  • Pass the State Court Interpreter Certification test.
  • Certification pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 221C.
  • Ability to interpret in simultaneous and consecutive modes.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and generate reports.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License or reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Existing NCSC Interpreter Certification.
  • Experience in a court setting.
  • Advanced interpreter skills and language proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets simultaneously and consecutively for defendants, witnesses, and victims in court.
  • Produces initial drafts of translations of official forms and documents.
  • Attends ongoing training as part of continuing education requirements.
  • Travels to various divisions of the Trial Court as needed.
  • Oversees activities of interpreters assigned to them.
  • Performs linguistic evaluations of per diem interpreters.
  • Conducts training activities and develops training materials.
  • Engages in public relations activities with other agencies.
