About The Position

Under the direction of the Coordinator for Interpreter Services and the Access to Justice Director, to provide simultaneous and consecutive interpretation for defendants, witnesses, and victims in court and for persons seeking assistance in the courts with the filing of petitions and completion of forms. To translate into English or Spanish official, technical, medical, and legal documents, certificates, letters, and other written material and tape recordings or video recordings. To participate in continued professional development and training as assigned by the Coordinator. To perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Coordinator, Director, and/or the State Court Administrator or their designees.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a senior high school or successful completion of the high school equivalency examination required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in Spanish/English interpretation and translation; successful completion of a recognized bilingual judicial court interpreting and translation program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Employment is contingent upon the achievement of a passing score on one of the following standardized tests within 18 months of hire: the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination or the National Center for State Court Consortium for State Court Interpreters; full certification required within 18 months thereafter.
  • Interpreters must also adhere to the Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility for Court Interpreters and comply with all other provisions set forth in the Rhode Island Judiciary Language Access Plan.
