About The Position

The Court Commissioner position at King County Superior Court focuses on Family Law, specifically handling Civil Protection Order calendars. This role involves presiding over various family law matters, ensuring fair and efficient court proceedings, and requires a strong background in family law and civil protection orders. The position is exempt from overtime provisions and serves at the pleasure of the court, with a work schedule typically from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Requirements

• At least 50% of current practice and a minimum of five years of recent experience in family law under RCW Title 26.
• One year or more of experience in Civil Protection Orders under RCW 7.105 (26.50) or equivalent experience.
• Membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association with no history of discipline.
• Familiarity with King County Family Law rules and practices.
• Ability to use personal computers and Microsoft Office programs, as well as Zoom for videoconferencing.
• Knowledge of the judicial system, applicable law, and King County local rules and procedures.
• Ability to objectively identify, analyze, and interpret legal issues and manage courtroom proceedings effectively.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with appropriate judicial temperament.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with court-based technology programs such as KC Script, KCMS, ShareFile, and E-Filing.

Responsibilities

• Hear family law matters including temporary orders, parenting plans, support, and property distribution.
• Determine adequate cause for modification of parenting plans.
• Establish parentage and child custody arrangements.
• Issue restraining orders and Civil Protection Orders.
• Handle contempt and enforcement cases.
• Oversee dissolutions of marriage and legal separations.
• Address other matters as assigned by the Presiding Judge.
