About The Position

The Laboratory Courier (LC) delivers supplies and reports to laboratory clients and picks up, transports, and delivers routine and expedited specimens from the client sites to the laboratory. The Courier ensures that the quality of specimens is maintained throughout the transport process and keeps specimen-tracking logs. This position also functions as a liaison between Laboratory Client Service and staff at client sites. This individual is responsible for keeping the transport vehicle clean and orderly. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include but not limited to the following: Drives safely and follows all related laws. Transports specimens, reports, equipment and supplies to various locations in a reliable and timely fashion. Follows the assigned courier run within the designated time frame. Communicates effectively with nursing staff, physicians and other staff at the client site(s) and maintains a professional relationship with Client Service staff. Completes daily logs of destinations and times. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty as outlined in the attached annual competency assessment and maintain an acceptable driving record. Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Must possess a New York driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.
  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Uses effective written and verbal communication skills to cooperatively work with customers and employees.
  • Listens well, takes direction and engages in interactive dialogues with others.
  • Seeks the input of others to achieve consensus.

  • Conducts telephone and personal inquiries to any of the laboratory’s customers with courtesy, respect and confidentiality.
  • Ability to: Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

  • Maintains specimen integrity during transport.
  • Accommodates STAT pickups as requested/instructed by a Client Service representative.
  • Keeps the courier vehicle in a clean and well-maintained condition.
  • Drives safely and follows all related laws.
  • Maintains courier manifests and follows established SOP for use of lockboxes and door tags.
  • Completes daily logs of destinations and times.
  • Makes suggestions for improvement or changes to schedules and/or routes to improve efficiency and meet customer needs.
  • Prepares and delivers customer supply orders.
