About The Position

This position will serve as County Maintenance Engineer for Ashe County. The employee in this position will be expected to manage, plan, and supervise all road maintenance for Ashe County in accordance with established policies and procedures. This position will ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials; to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget; supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees, communicate effectively; maintain positive working relationships; and operate motor vehicle safely. The selected candidate should have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods and techniques. The employee in this position will use professional engineering skills and knowledge to solve difficult highway maintenance problems and to accomplish force account construction projects. Duties of this position include supervising and monitoring the maintenance program to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Other duties include supervising and evaluating the performance of other employees. Selected candidate should have considerable knowledge of the use and operations of all field and office engineering instruments, ability to understand, explain and administer contracts, ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications, ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations. The employee in this position will be expected to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within the limits of budget and data. The selected candidate must be able to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with the general public, local governments, fellow employees, etc. The selected candidate must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely and perform field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, high volumes of traffic, and extreme temperatures/weather conditions. Work includes emergency situations, nights, and weekends. Safety toe footwear is required.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of the use and operations of all field and office engineering instruments
  • Ability to understand, explain and administer contracts
  • Ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with the general public, local governments, fellow employees, etc.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and perform field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, high volumes of traffic, and extreme temperatures/weather conditions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
