About The Position

Our cashier/take-out staff are sometimes our guests’ only impression of Highway Inn’s customer service, whether it be over the phone or take-out order. These team members are cool under pressure, capable of handling phone and in-person interactions, and quick to welcome arriving guests. The ideal candidate has a basic understanding of Hawaiian food and culture, is an efficient multi-tasker, has a welcoming demeanor, and genuinely conveys the sense of aloha and ‘ohana that is core to our brand. Our Waipahu location is just a few blocks from the original Highway Inn location, founded almost 75 years ago. Our Kaka’ako location is in Urban Honolulu and is popular with locals for business lunches and tourists staying in nearby Waikiki. Serving Hawaiian Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, beer, wine and cocktails, open seven days a week. In September 2025, we launched Tutu's Place at the Bishop Museum, and 1950's themed plantation house / retro diner setting, serving coffee and shaved ice along with our traditional Hawaiian fare and some items unique to the cafe. Featured on the US and Canadian Food Network Channels. We are women-owned and use ocean-friendly packaging.

Requirements

  • 1 to 2 years customer service experience or in similar role; preferred experience in cashiering and point of sale systems, experience in cafe setting a plus
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attendance record
  • Positive attitude
  • Team player who is able to multitask efficiently
  • Able to stand and/or walk continuously for long periods of time, read the POS screen and hear customers in an often-noisy environment
  • Must be able to lift 20-25 pounds with or without assistance

Responsibilities

  • Promptly and warmly greeting guests with aloha on the phone or in person
  • Providing information or answering basic questions regarding: menu items and general restaurant information (such as parking, hours, promotions, etc.)
  • Accurately ringing up and cashing out orders in Point of Sale (POS) system, making correct change and reviewing order with the customer to confirm accuracy during the order process and when customer receives food
  • Simultaneously managing incoming phone and online orders and walk-in orders
  • Making espresso drinks
  • Expo duties (assembling drinks, pulling pastry or other prepared items for customer orders)
