About The Position

Newberry Community School is seeking a compassionate and dedicated School Counselor to support students’ academic, social, and emotional development. This role works collaboratively with students, families, and school staff to provide counseling services, promote student well-being, and support a safe, positive learning environment.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Guidance/Counseling or School Counseling
  • Valid Florida School Counselor Certification
  • Minimum of one (1) year of school counseling or teaching experience
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty, administrators, and outside agencies
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer applications and word processing software
  • Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and developmental levels
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive topics with professionalism, discretion, and care
  • Knowledge of student assessment tools, including the ability to evaluate and interpret standardized test results
  • Ability to collaborate with school staff and external agencies to support student success and well-being

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual counseling to students addressing academic, personal, social, and emotional concerns
  • Assist students in identifying strengths, challenges, and strategies for success
  • Support students in developing coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and personal issues
  • Conduct small-group counseling sessions focused on social skills, study skills, conflict resolution, grief, and self-esteem
  • Facilitate peer mediation and conflict resolution programs
  • Collaborate with students, teachers, and parents to develop academic plans and support in overcoming academic challenges
  • Assist students with academic goal setting, course selection, and post-secondary planning
  • Provide crisis intervention and immediate support in situations involving bullying, family concerns, or mental health emergencies
  • Collaborate with school administration and external agencies to ensure student safety and well-being
  • Promote mental health awareness through workshops, presentations, and informational resources
  • Educate students, staff, and parents on mental health topics and available support services
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to identify students in need of support and to coordinate interventions.
  • Participate in the Child Study Team to identify students requiring targeted or intensive services
  • Participate in the Threat Management Team to assess and monitor potential risks to the school community
  • Act as a liaison between the school, families, and community resources
  • Maintain accurate, confidential counseling records and student documentation
  • Prepare reports and assessments as required by school policy or administration needs
  • Stay current on best practices, research, and professional standards in school counseling, mental health, and educational strategies
  • Participate in ongoing professional development
  • Assist students and parents in understanding school policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned
