About The Position

The purpose of the Counselor is to provide guidance with a wide spectrum from home situations, personal situations to academic preparation, coordinate high school testing of students in transition (middle school to high school; high school to post high school), remain current on educational issues.

Requirements

  • Kansas Certification as a counselor.
  • Caring personal relationship with students seek the welfare of the students.
  • Ability in area of diagnostic testing.
  • Ability to administer testing.
  • Available to students and parents (be on call) at all times.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel all students.
  • Manage a career program, integrate information into the classroom.
  • Provide mandatory and elective testing program.
  • recommend tests, selection, administration of program.
  • testing achievement and ability in cognitive and affective areas.
  • interpretation of tests to students, parents, staff, and Board of Education.
  • assist in evaluation relative to curriculum development.
  • Adjust and develop, with the administration and staff, curriculum offerings:
  • research needs, philosophies and trends in curriculum development;
  • review goal setting techniques as well as district goals.
  • Counsel students in all academic area:
  • guide students into class;
  • monitor student progress.
  • Inform staff and parents of student progress through written and oral communication.
  • Be an active member of the building team during the development of IEPs for students.
  • Maintain one five year follow-up of graduates including:
  • develop questionnaire on courses (curriculum), attitudes;
  • location and occupation;
  • academic preparation;
  • Develop and maintain an active scholarship program for seniors:
  • contact with secondary institutions;
  • Work with staff in providing for recognition of student achievement through an aware-reward system.
  • Coordinate vocation counselors and high staff through classroom experience.
  • Coordinate services with the school psychologist monitor and assist in identification of students with psychological problems.
  • Keep a current file of student academic progress and student goals:
  • incoming students four year plan;
  • graduation needs;
  • college entrance requirements;
  • academic-activity refinement;
  • specific college entrance requirements;
  • Be a friend, confidant, source of support, and a listener for students.
  • Be a communicator with parents and instructors.
  • Be available to students.
  • Keep the administration appraised of activities in the counseling department.
  • Be sympathetic to staff and students.
