About The Position

University Counseling Services at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville invite applications for a Counselor. A counselor provides professional mental health counseling and consultation services for the campus community, incorporates a brief therapeutic model to address the emotional and behavioral needs of students, creates developmental programming to increase healthy lifestyle and coping behaviors across campus, and provides strategic direction and advocacy for university mental health policy and initiatives. Position involves assessment/screening of needs, consultation, outreach, crisis management and professional counseling services (individual, couples and group). This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date at the conclusion of the academic year. While there may be a possibility for extension or transition into a full-time role, this is not guaranteed and will depend on institutional needs and candidate fit.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work or related field.
  • Professional licensure in counseling or social work in the state of Wisconsin
  • Experience providing mental health counseling.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student records, personnel, or organizational matters.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates psycho-educational and process-oriented groups
  • Prepares presentations and outreach activities and facilitates student adjustment and success programs to promote a healthy campus
  • Provides individual and group counseling to students struggling with developmental and/or personal mental health issues and refers students to appropriate community resources
  • Serves on multidisciplinary campus committees
  • Provides counseling and/or information and referral services to faculty and staff
  • Provide individual, group or couples mental health counseling adhering to a brief psychotherapy model that is time sensitive, developmental and goal oriented.
  • Administer and interpret inventories and tests given to students in conjunction with individual or group counseling.
  • Provide crisis intervention with students and support for other involved persons.
  • Consult with the director and other UCS staff regularly regarding case management issues.
  • Make appropriate referrals.
  • Consult with community counseling or psychiatric personnel/agencies as needed.
