About The Position

The Counselor Trainee/Technician I/II position at Putyuk Children's Home involves providing care for children aged birth to 18 years. The role requires working as part of a team to implement individualized treatment plans and ensure a supportive environment for the residents. The position reports to the Lead Youth Counselor and is classified as non-exempt.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR card within 6 months of hire.
  • Alaska Driver's license preferred with a good driving history.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including mornings, evenings, overnight, weekends, and occasionally on short notice.
  • OCS background check required.
  • For Counselor Technician I: High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience working with children in a structured setting.
  • For Counselor Technician II: Minimum of 5 years of experience working with children and completion of 12 hours of E-learning courses related to child and family development.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior computer and typing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a positive relationship and interact with residents in a helpful and therapeutic manner.
  • Promote individual, physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional development.
  • Work as a team and consult with counselors routinely and as needed.
  • Supervise children at all times and follow established schedules.
  • Support children in scheduled activities and prepare necessary materials.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, predictable, and therapeutic environment.
  • Assist in meal preparation following posted menus.
  • Assist Youth counselors in planning and presenting educational, recreational, and daily living activities.
  • Make appropriate decisions and act as a positive role model.
  • Support children's behavior through positive guidance and set clear limits.
  • Complete daily documentation noting behavior, mood, activities, and progress.
  • Work assigned shifts including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation with other staff.
  • Perform other routine duties to maintain a safe and receptive environment.
