About The Position

Under the supervision of the Program Director or the Assistant Director, Counselors provide support and assistance to clients of this adult psychiatric acute residential treatment program. The Counselors advocate for and respond to clients' treatment and rehabilitation needs. Specific functions are outlined in the job description. Generally, Counselor duties include: Promote the philosophy of social rehabilitation as it applies to residential treatment; performance of intake interviews; group, individual, and family counseling; treatment plan development and implementation; coordination of activities; discharge planning; and developing and maintaining contact with clients' therapists and related treatment programs. Maintain computer requirements of the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services. In addition, the counselor is required to maintain clinical records and to perform minor household repair and cleaning tasks. Candidates must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including some weekend and overnight shifts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
  • Specific experience in residential treatment and/or knowledge of social rehabilitation is preferred.
  • At least one year's experience in a community mental health program is preferred.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Basic word processing skills.
  • Demonstrate an acceptable level of maturity, good judgment, and emotional stability.
  • Ability to negotiate several flights of stairs and lift and carry 20lb packages multiple times during each work shift.

  • Experience as a consumer of mental health services.
  • Valid California driver's license and insurability under the agency's auto insurance policies.
