About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Students Services, or designee, performs general counseling with a diverse, multi-ethnic population of community college students. Assignment will include academic, career and personal counseling; related transfer activities; teaching; and performs the following general and specific functions. Counseling schedule may include evening or weekend hours as part of contract assignment. Counselors are expected to use and keep abreast of advanced teaching methods, including the use of current and future technologies to support student learning and career objectives.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Marriage, Family and Child Counseling or Career Development.
  • Possession of a California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist ( MFT ).
  • May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Counselor Credential. (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).
  • The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence, as clear and reliable as college transcripts, as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications).
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff, faculty, and students.

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of community college experience with a diverse multi-ethnic student population.
  • Experience teaching counseling-related courses and/or conducting workshops.
  • Ability to write, speak, and converse in both English and Spanish.
  • Demonstrated individual and group counseling skills utilizing developmental methodologies with under-prepared and basic skills community college students.
  • Experience using microcomputers, multi-media, and the internet in counseling or related activities.
  • Possess a multilingual, multicultural background.
