About The Position

Directly supervises the counseling staff. Responsible for the management of this department, in compliance with government and management directives. Interfaces with the health services department regarding mental health and TEAP program consultations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proof of 15 semester hours of instruction in social services-related instruction
  • Five years of experience in counseling or related field
  • Two years of experience working with youth and young adults
  • Knowledge of human behavior and individual/group counseling techniques
  • Management skills and familiarity with case summaries; strong organizational skills
  • Positive, quality customer service to students, staff, and other center customers
  • Ability to promote the Career Success Standards (CSS) by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students when necessary, and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • If the position requires driving, a valid driver's license in the state of employment with an acceptable driving record is required
  • 1-9 documentation required to verify authorization to work in the United States
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and manages the administrative and programmatic activities of the department.
  • Provides staff training, evaluates staff performance, and implements personnel changes as approved by the Center Director.
  • Assists the management staff in the preparation of the departmental budget; monitors/controls expenditures; reviews changes to budget authorizations.
  • Actively involved with other center staff during the Career Preparation Period (CPP), Career Development Period (CDP), and Career Transition Period (CTP).
  • Assists in the development of new and revised policies and procedures affecting counseling services; coordinates with other departments to ensure attainment of overall objectives.
  • Develops and implements an effective counseling services program and ensures that each Counselor is assigned a caseload with guidelines; takes appropriate steps to ensure that administrative procedures are followed, such as adequate record-keeping and maintenance of schedules.
  • Participates in training of the center staff as coordinated with the Human Resources Manager.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains collaborative systems of communication among counseling services, center staff, and outside community services to facilitate student progress and performance; evaluates all center components and recommends modifications as needed.
  • Acts as the liaison between Counselors and the Mental Health Consultant; recommends medical or psychiatric evaluation for emotional or psychological problems; evaluates results and takes remedial action as warranted.
  • Manages and coordinates with the Health and Wellness Manager a variety of special programs consisting of human sexuality programs, sexual assault programs, and other special counseling programs; ensures that family planning, pregnancy, and orientation programs are conducted effectively by the counseling staff.
  • Oversees the diversity program as it relates to the center phases.
  • Ensures that the arrival of new students is comfortable and safe.
  • Assists in the initial interviews of new students.
  • Oversees counseling staff in conducting the pre-arrival calls; ensures that all prospective students receive correct information prior to center arrival, particularly Career Development Services System (CDSS) and “workplace” expectations.
  • Develops an unauthorized absence (UA) retrieval system for all residential and nonresidential students.
  • Maintains accountability of staff, students, and property; adheres to safety practices and performs safety inspections in area of responsibility; informs the Safety Manager of any potential problems immediately.
  • Works in partnership with staff from all departments to ensure effective supervision and service provided to students.
