About The Position

The School of Engineering Medicine in collaboration with Texas A&M College of Engineering, Texas A&M School of Medicine and the state’s top-ranked Houston Methodist Hospital offer an innovative medical school program called ENMED. This program was established to transform healthcare through translational interdisciplinary research, the development of medical technologies, and the development and training of “Physicianeers.” ENMED delivers a revolutionary blended curriculum with focus on innovation and entrepreneurship where students receive a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Engineering degree in the same four years. The Counseling and Development Specialist II reports to the Director of Student Affairs and is responsible for designing, implementing, and delivering academic support services and learning resource programs for medical students. This role focuses on advising and supporting students who require additional assistance to promote academic success, personal development, and progression within the medical education program. Salary: Will be commensurate based on the selected hire’s education and experience. Location: Houston, TX

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education or related field
  • Five years experience in academic and/or career counseling in a higher education setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in education
  • Experience in medical school environment
  • Experience with STEP 1 and STEP 2 prep.
  • Experience using diagnostic educational and learning tools.
  • Assessments related to achievement, intellectual functioning, attention, test anxiety, DSM-V criteria, learning styles and career development; including but not limited to: WAIS, Woodcock-Johnson, Nelson-Denny, Myers Briggs, LASSI.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Support
  • Student Counseling
  • Meet with students during orientation to proactively assess skills, potential weaknesses, and optimize performance in the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with academic faculty to provide faculty resources and support for student remediation needs.
  • Student Evaluation
  • Coordinate academic support services and programs for all USMLE Step exams, and other exams required for students.
  • Development and Implementation of Academic Support Programs
  • Develop and implement required workshops for students in the areas of Time Management, Effective Study Strategies, Examination Preparation and Performance
  • Represent academic support services at meetings, seminars or conferences, such as Northeast Group on Educational Affairs or other professional societies addressing student success.
  • Continuing education and knowledge of current trends, student needs, and innovative support services is important to meeting the needs of medical students.
  • Evaluate and recommend the purchase of supplemental learning resources for medical students, graduate students, and residents.
  • Risk Identification
  • Work with faculty to design an early identification process for "at-risk" students.
